For many starting in the NZPCS Million Dollar Blueprint, creating a Blog for the first time can be a challenge for those unfamiliar with html and website management.
We make it easy by providing a basic WordPress template however most of us like to personalise our Blog presentation to make it our own.
You can do this by changing the header image and adding elements to it like an event calendar, audio buttons or recent readers log etc.
The easiest way to add these elements is to install web widgets.
A web widget is a portable chunk of code that can be installed and executed within any separate HTML-based web page by an end user without requiring additional compilation.
WordPress has now introduced widget support in WordPress release 2.2 as standard.
WordPress 2.0.x
For this version of WordPress you need widget 1.0. Download this version for the NZPCS “work-from-home” Blog Template (ver. 2.04)
WordPress 2.1.x
For this version you need this widget file.
Installation Instructions
To be able to use the widget plug-in and widgets on your Blog, the NZPCS work-from-home theme sidebar needs to be changed and the following installation procedure followed.
- After downloading, unzip widget.1.0 on your PC
- Using either your FTP Program or cPanel, save or rename your existing “sidebar.php” file in the NZPCS theme directory on your host. (remember what you called it!)
TIP: If you have installed graphic adverts in your sidebar, go to “Presentation Tab” in your WordPress Admin area and copy and paste the code from “sidebar” to a text editor like notepad and save, before completing this step. - Upload to your NZPCS theme directory on your host, the “sidebar.php” and “functions.php” files from the unzipped widget 1.0 files.
- Under the “plugins” directory create a folder called “widgets”
- Upload the following files to the newly created “widgets” folder.
- scriptaculous folder
- delicious.php
- gsearch.php
- rss.php
- widgets.php - Login to your WordPress admin. (e.g. http://work-from-home.yourdomain.com/wp-admin)
- Go to plugins menu and activate the “Sidebar Widgets” plugin. You can activate any others you see there if you want.
- In your browser bring up your “work-from-home” Blog in another window (I.E) or tab (Firefox). You will see that all your pages, categories etc. are there.
- However, if you have inserted any graphic ads, or anything else in your original sidebar template… they will be missing. This is not as bad as it first seems so don’t panic… we will remedy this in the following step 12
- In WordPress admin, go to “Presentation” Tab and click on “Sidebar Widgets”
You will then see a blank sidebar with a list of “widgets” underneath. - Any widget you move into the sidebar will replace those actually on your Blog.
- Now for any graphic adverts or anything else you use a text box. (You can have as many text boxes as you want.)
In the text box you can place the original “link” code by selecting the configure icon that appears when you drag and drop the text box into your side bar. Copy and paste from your original sidebar. - You can play about re-arrange things as you want in the sidebar widget menu.
And that’s it. If you want more widgets you can find a list of them at WordPress Widgets or do a search on Google for more. You can use the Google Search box on the right >>>>
You can install an adsense widget or even a translator widget on your Blog.
If you need to go back to your old sidebar simply copy it back into the NZPCS theme directory.

This is a great blog with some great tips. Here are some no cost ways of promotion that can be effecive when implemented:
1) Print some simple ads from your computer, get them photocopied for as cheap as possible, then post them in bus shelters.
2) Use those same ads from above and go door-2-door with them, or alternatively you can get some locals to do it for you for a small price.
3) Write a really informative and tip filled article and submit it to as many article hubs as possible. This way it increases the chance of ezine publishers to pick up your article and get even more exposure.
4) Post to free classified ad sites. There are many, but the key here is consistancy. If you can consistantly post to free classified ad sites your ad will be seen.
5) Safelists is another route to go. Many people do say that safelist advertising isn’t effective, but it can be if you post consistantly to the same safelists. join 5 - 10 safelists and everyday for a month post the same ad and you will see that you will get some traffic from safelists.
There are many more free ways to promote your business or website. These are just a few.
